WNBA Recap | August 15, 2026
Saturday's three-game slate delivered a road win for a team fighting for playoff seeding, a defensive statement in the nation's capital, and a marquee showdown between the West's top two teams. New York held off Connecticut. Washington's defense throttled Los Angeles. And Minnesota outlasted Las Vegas in a game that lived up to its billing as a preview of what the postseason could look like. Here's how it all went down, plus a look at the current playoff picture with the stretch run underway.
Liberty Hold Off Sun's First-Quarter Push
New York Liberty 82, Connecticut Sun 75
Connecticut came out hot, building a 10-point cushion behind a strong first quarter, but New York answered with a dominant 27-10 second quarter that flipped the game for good. Final: 82-75, New York improves to 22-14 and stays sixth in the East, while Connecticut falls to 8-25 and remains eliminated from playoff contention.
Jonquel Jones posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds on 56.3 percent shooting, and Marine Johannes was nearly perfect, going 6-of-9 from the field (5-of-8 from three) for 17 points at 94.4 percent true shooting. New York's 18 assists and their 75 percent fast-break conversion in the second quarter were the numbers that mattered most in a game Connecticut controlled early.
Connecticut had a strong individual effort to hang its hat on. Olivia Nelson-Ododa posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds on 77.8 percent shooting, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Charlisse Leger-Walker added 14 points on 4-of-9 from three. But Connecticut's 35.8 percent shooting as a team and their inability to sustain the first-quarter intensity through the second frame, when New York outscored them 27-10, were the numbers that decided the game.

Mystics' Interior Defense Overwhelms Sparks
Washington Mystics 80, Los Angeles Sparks 70
Washington controlled this game from the opening tip, dominating the paint and closing it out with a 25-12 fourth quarter that put any doubt to rest. Final: 80-70, Washington improves to 20-14 and stays seventh in the East, while Los Angeles falls to 12-22 and remains outside the playoff picture in the West.
Kiki Iriafen was dominant, going 9-of-12 from the field for 19 points at 71.3 percent true shooting with eight rebounds. Shakira Austin posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Sonia Citron added 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting (4-of-5 from three) with eight assists. Washington's 60 points in the paint and their 23 assists on 34 made field goals reflected complete control of the game from start to finish.
Los Angeles competed but never found a consistent answer inside. Rae Burrell led the Sparks with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting, and Nneka Ogwumike added 15 points with seven rebounds and four steals despite a technical foul. But Los Angeles's 39.3 percent shooting and their 14 turnovers, converted into 15 Washington points, reflected a team that could not match Washington's interior physicality for 40 minutes.

Lynx Outlast Wilson's 32-Point Night in Western Conference Showcase
Las Vegas Aces 87, Minnesota Lynx 92
This one lived up to the billing. Minnesota built an early cushion but the Aces tied it by the half. Minnesota came out firing in the third and built a ten point lead, but Las Vegas mounted a real fourth-quarter push behind A'ja Wilson before the Lynx closed it out. Final: 92-87, Minnesota improves to 30-7 and remains the best team in the league by a wide margin, while Las Vegas falls to 24-13 and stays third in the West.
Olivia Miles led the way with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting (3-of-8 from three) with eight assists, though five turnovers reflected the pressure Las Vegas applied late. Napheesa Collier added 19 points at 69.6 percent true shooting, but ran into some foul trouble early in the third quarter, which went most unnoticed thanks to Natasha Howard’s double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Minnesota's 42.3 percent three-point shooting and their 70 percent second-chance conversion were the numbers that built and sustained the lead against one of the league's best defenses.
A'ja Wilson was sensational even in defeat, going 10-of-15 from the field for 32 points at 78.9 percent true shooting, drawing 10 fouls and going 11-of-12 from the free throw line. NaLyssa Smith posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, nine of those offensive. Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young combined for nine turnovers, and Las Vegas's 13 total turnovers, converted into eight Minnesota points, were part of the story, but the larger factor was simply Minnesota's sustained execution across four quarters against a Wilson-led fourth-quarter surge that came up just short.

NYL, WAS, & MIN Wins.
Saturday reinforced the shape of the league with roughly two months of regular season basketball complete. New York and Washington both picked up meaningful wins in the crowded scramble for playoff seeding in the East, and Minnesota's win over Las Vegas is the clearest reminder yet that the Lynx remain the team to beat heading into the postseason.
Star of the Night: A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
32 points | 10-of-15 FG | 78.9% true shooting | 10 fouls drawn | 11-of-12 FT
Wilson's performance came in a loss, but her efficiency and aggression against the league's best defense stood above every other individual effort on Saturday's slate. Miles's 23-point, eight-assist night and Iriafen's 71.3 percent true shooting both made strong cases, but Wilson's ability to nearly single-handedly will Las Vegas back into the game in the fourth quarter earns her the top spot.
Dud of the Night: Jackie Young, Las Vegas Aces
8 points | 3-of-11 FG | 27.3% field goal percentage | 6 turnovers
Young's six turnovers were the most costly number for any player across Saturday's three games, directly undermining Las Vegas's chances in a five-point loss to the league's top team. In a game decided by a handful of possessions, that level of giveaways from a primary ball-handler compounded an already difficult night shooting the ball.
How We Did: Checking the Preview Predictions
Saturday's picks went 2-for-3 on sides and a perfect 3-for-3 on totals, one of the strongest nights of the season.
New York @ Connecticut: The preview leaned New York -7.5 with the under at 173.5, citing the Liberty's recent form and Connecticut's home defensive letdown. New York won by seven, just missing the cover, but the total came in at 157, comfortably under the number. The side missed by a single possession, and the under call held up.
Los Angeles @ Washington: The preview leaned Washington -6.5 with the under at 172.5, pointing to a historically consistent under trend in this specific series and Washington's rebounding advantage. Washington won by 10, comfortably covering, and the total came in at 150, well under the number. A clean sweep on the sharpest read of the night.
Minnesota @ Las Vegas: The preview leaned Minnesota -3.5 with the over at 165, expecting Minnesota's road execution to carry the day in a measuring-stick game. Minnesota won by five, covering, and the total came in at 179, comfortably over the number. Another clean sweep in the day's marquee matchup.
The headline takeaway: Saturday was one of the best nights of the season for the preview, with all three totals hitting and two of three sides covering. The lone miss, New York failing to cover by half a possession, was still a correctly identified winner.
