One Game for a First Title, and the Series Has Swung Every Way

KEY STAT

32

Atlanta's first-quarter points in Game 6, including six threes, matching the Dream's three-point total from all of Game 5.

Atlanta came out of Thursday's midday tip on fire. A 13-0 run broke the game open early, the Dream led by as many as 25, and Allisha Gray finally had her shooting night: 23 points on 8-of-12, including 5-of-7 from three, with a corner three to seal it in the final minute. Rhyne Howard added 21, and Atlanta made 12 threes, twice its total from Game 5.

Golden State didn't go quietly. Gabby Williams scored 22 points in the second half alone and the Valkyries cut a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit to 11 inside the final two minutes, a run worth remembering for a team that now gets its own crowd back. Kiah Stokes has been the series' steadiest defender, and the Valkyries have held Atlanta under 70 in all three of their wins.

Home teams are 4-2 in this series, and the scoring has bounced around: 132, 144, 168, 129, 119 and 149 combined points through six games. The two blowouts came when one team got hot from three early; the grinders came when neither did.

Atlanta wins if Gray and Howard keep shooting the way they did Thursday, and Angel Reese wins enough of her matchup with Stokes to give the Dream an inside game to go with it.

Golden State wins if the defense that held Atlanta to 55 in Game 5 shows up at home, and Williams carries her Game 6 second half into the opening quarter.

Our number has Atlanta winning by 3.0, which is 4.5 points off a line that has Golden State favored by 1.5, enough for a real gap on the side. The total gap is wider: our number of 133.2 sits 9.3 points under the posted 142.5. Lean Atlanta +1.5 (Lean), and lean the under 142.5 (Strong).

What to Watch For Tonight.

Our series call was Golden State in 6, and Thursday's result means that one missed. Tonight our number leans the other way on the side. Watch the first quarter from three: in this series, the team that got hot early has usually controlled the game. Game 7, the first in WNBA Finals history, tips at 8:00 PM ET in San Francisco.
