WNBA Preview | August 2, 2026

With roughly 14 to 16 games left for most teams, the top-eight, league-wide playoff race is starting to take real shape, and Sunday's four-game slate touches nearly every tier of it. Indiana, riding a five-game win streak, gets the league's best team on ABC. Los Angeles and Portland, both fighting from outside the current cut line, meet directly. Connecticut visits a Dallas team trying to hold its playoff position, and Toronto closes the night in what projects as one of the more lopsided games of the week against Golden State. Here's what to watch.

Fever Visit the League's Best Team on ABC

Indiana Fever @ Minnesota Lynx | 1:00 PM ET | ABC

This is a genuine measuring-stick game. Indiana is 19-10 and has won five straight, good enough to sit fourth overall and comfortably inside the playoff picture. Minnesota is 24-6, the best record in the league by a wide margin, and hasn't shown many signs of slowing down since Napheesa Collier's return. Both rosters arrive as healthy and complete as they've been all season, Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, and Lexie Hull for Indiana against Olivia Miles, Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Collier, and Natasha Howard for Minnesota.

Indiana's win streak has been built on Clark's continued two-way growth and a supporting cast that has found its rhythm at the right time. Minnesota's collective depth remains the standard the rest of the league is chasing, and a home game against a quality opponent is exactly the kind of test that will tell us whether Indiana's streak reflects real contender status or a favorable stretch of schedule.

DraftKings has Minnesota -6.5, with the total at 192.5, the highest number on Sunday's card. Indiana's recent form deserves real respect, but Minnesota at home, at full strength, against anyone remains one of the league's toughest outs. Lean Minnesota -6.5, with the caveat that Indiana's streak makes this a game worth watching closely rather than assuming chalk.

Indiana wins if Clark continues the two-way form that has powered the five-game streak, Boston and Mitchell provide enough secondary scoring to prevent Minnesota from loading up on Clark, and the Fever's defense holds up against the league's most complete offense.

Minnesota wins if the Lynx's collective depth and ball movement continue the form that has made them the league's best team by a wide margin, Collier and Miles combine for the kind of two-way dominance that has defined Minnesota's season, and the Lynx protect home court against a team playing its best basketball of the year.

PICK

MIN -6.5

O/U 192.5

Lynx win; two elite offenses should push this total.

Sparks and Fire Meet in a Direct Playoff-Positioning Battle

Los Angeles Sparks @ Portland Fire | 3:30 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

Neither of these teams is currently inside the top eight, and this is exactly the kind of game that decides whether either gets there. Los Angeles has lost six straight, with real issues on defense and taking care of the basketball, a -2.1 net rating that has trended the wrong direction. Portland has been the better story of late, covering seven of its last ten games behind solid shooting, even if their own net rating (-5.8) suggests a team still finding consistency.

Los Angeles's six-game skid is the headline here, and their road shooting numbers, 32.6 percent from three while allowing 48 percent overall, paint a picture of a team that has lost its defensive footing at the worst possible time in the playoff race. Portland at home has been the more reliable side of this equation recently, even against a Sparks roster that still has real individual talent in Kelsey Plum and Nneka Ogwumike.

DraftKings has Los Angeles as a small favorite, close to a pick'em. Given the Sparks' six-game losing streak and Portland's recent cover form, the market's confidence in Los Angeles looks shakier than the number suggests. Lean Portland +points.

Los Angeles wins if Plum and Ogwumike snap the team out of its six-game slide with efficient scoring nights, the Sparks tighten up defensively after a stretch of leaky perimeter shooting allowed, and Los Angeles's road struggles reverse course against a beatable Portland defense.

Portland wins if the Fire's recent shooting efficiency continues, their home environment provides the edge that has made them a live underdog in recent weeks, and Los Angeles's six-game losing streak extends against a team playing with real confidence.

PICK

POR +1.5

O/U 184.5

Fire win outright; LA's losing streak continues.

Sun Visit a Dallas Team Trying to Hold Playoff Position

Connecticut Sun @ Dallas Wings | 7:00 PM ET | ESPN

Dallas sits sixth overall, firmly in the playoff picture but not far removed from a crowded pack of teams behind them, and their recent form has been a genuine concern. The Wings have failed to cover four of their last six, with real defensive issues, and Connecticut has actually shot the ball better than their record suggests over their last five games, hitting 36 percent from three despite a 7-22 overall mark.

Dallas at home has still been productive offensively, shooting 45.6 percent overall with 33.7 percent from three, but a defense that has struggled to close out games is a real vulnerability against a Connecticut team playing with more offensive rhythm than its record indicates. This is the kind of spot where a playoff-positioning team can slip if it isn't locked in against a supposedly lesser opponent.

DraftKings has Dallas as a substantial favorite, in the 11-point range. Connecticut's recent shooting form and Dallas's defensive slippage make that number worth fading. Lean Connecticut +11.5.

Connecticut wins if their improved three-point shooting from recent games continues, Dallas's defensive issues show up again in a big way, and the Sun's role players build on a stretch that has been better than their record suggests.

Dallas wins if the Wings' offense continues its productive home form, their defense tightens up after a stretch of failed covers, and Dallas protects its playoff positioning with the kind of business-like win a sixth-place team needs against a struggling opponent.

PICK

CON +11.5

O/U 170.5

Under ↓

Wings win, but Dallas's defensive issues make the full number a fade.

Tempo Visit Golden State as Massive Underdogs

Toronto Tempo @ Golden State Valkyries | 8:30 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

Toronto fell to 10-18 after a 104-72 home loss to Minnesota on July 30, and the Tempo arrive in San Francisco with real injury concerns, Brittney Sykes out and both Olayinka Bankole and Isabelle Harrison game-time decisions. Golden State, at 19-9 and third overall, has its own question mark in Gabby Williams, also a game-time decision, but the Valkyries' depth has been the story of their second half more than any single player.

This is one of the largest spreads of the week, and it reflects a genuine gap between a Golden State team playing for playoff seeding and a Toronto roster dealing with both a talent gap and a thinning injury report. Chase Center has been a difficult environment for visiting teams all season, and Golden State's recent form suggests they're rounding into form at exactly the right time.

DraftKings has Golden State favored by a large double-digit number, with the total in the mid-160s, one of the lowest of the week. The gap in overall talent and health is significant enough to support laying the points here. Lean Golden State big, and the under given both teams' recent scoring struggles and Toronto's injury-thinned rotation.

Toronto wins if Marina Mabrey has an outlier scoring night that keeps the Tempo within striking distance, Toronto's shorthanded rotation somehow finds enough offense to hang around, and Golden State shows any signs of looking ahead on a light schedule night.

Golden State wins if the Valkyries' depth compensates for any Williams absence the way it has most of the season, their home-court advantage at Chase Center continues to be one of the league's most difficult environments, and Golden State treats Sunday as another step in solidifying playoff seeding.

PICK

GSV -13.5

O/U 165.5

Valkyries win and cover behind their depth advantage.

What to Watch For Today & Tonight.

Indiana's test against Minnesota is the clearest measuring-stick game of the day, a chance to see whether the Fever's five-game streak reflects real contender status against the league's best team. The Sparks-Fire game carries the most direct playoff-positioning weight of the four, two teams outside the current cut line fighting to change that. And Dallas's home game against Connecticut is worth watching closely for a playoff team that has quietly struggled defensively of late, exactly the kind of trap game that can cost a spot down the stretch.
