WNBA Preview | July 28, 2026

Tuesday brings a five-game slate as the WNBA returns from the All-Star break. Connecticut visits Washington, Toronto heads to a Minnesota team that got Napheesa Collier back before the break, Indiana travels to Seattle riding a three-game rout streak, Portland is in Las Vegas against an Aces team that just lost to Washington, and New York closes the night in Los Angeles. Here's what to watch, with an independent lean on every side and total before we get to the market number.

Two Bottom-Tier Offenses Collide in Washington

Connecticut Sun @ Washington Mystics | 7:30 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

There's a certain grinding, ugly beauty to a matchup like this one, two rosters that have spent the season figuring out how to win without much shot-making, meeting in a building where possessions will be earned rather than given away. Washington's young core has bought into defense as its identity, and Connecticut, in the middle of a full rebuild, has quietly discovered the same thing over the last few weeks.

Washington ranks third in the league in defensive rating but dead last in offensive rating. Connecticut is right there with them, ranked 14th on offense. These two teams combined for just 125 points in their last meeting, and over the last ten games both have been genuinely stingy defensively, Washington second in defensive rating in that span and Connecticut third. That is the real story here, not the standings gap: two bad offenses colliding, with whichever defense forces more empty possessions deciding the margin. Shakira Austin has grabbed at least nine rebounds in nine of her last eleven games and should clean up plenty of misses on a night neither team shoots it well.

DraftKings has Washington -6.5 at home, with the total set at 156.5. Washington's defensive floor and home rebounding edge make them the right side, but not by 6.5 — Connecticut has actually improved defensively over its last ten games and won the second meeting 68-57. Lean Washington -3 to -4, meaning the -6.5 line is overpriced.

Washington wins if Austin and Iriafen continue dominating the glass and Washington's defense holds Connecticut under 80, Sonia Citron gives them a second scoring option beyond the paint, and the Mystics avoid the kind of scoring drought that has occasionally sunk a bottom-tier offense against a defense playing its best basketball.

Connecticut wins if the Sun's improved defense over the last ten games forces enough empty Washington possessions to keep this within reach, their role players build on the form that won them the second meeting 68-57, and Connecticut's rebuilding roster plays its most complete road game of the season.

Lynx Get Collier Back and Face a Toronto Team in Freefall

Toronto Tempo @ Minnesota Lynx | 8:00 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

Every so often a single roster move reshapes an entire betting market before oddsmakers can fully catch up, and that's the situation Minnesota finds itself in tonight. The Lynx were already the best team in the league. Now they have their best player back.

Napheesa Collier missed the season's first 27 games recovering from ankle surgery and made her debut July 22 against Seattle, dropping 24 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes. Minnesota is now first in the league in offensive rating with Olivia Miles pushing pace, and adding a healthy Collier back into that mix is a net positive most markets underprice after a long absence. Toronto, meanwhile, is dealing with real attrition: Brittney Sykes is out, Kiki Rice was questionable, and the Tempo have fallen to last in the league in defensive rating while losing seven of their last eight, including a 26-point loss to this same Minnesota team on July 20 (100-72).

DraftKings has Minnesota -15.5, with the total at 184.5. This is one of the rare cases where the market number undersells the gap rather than oversells it. A healthy Collier plus Miles' pace plus a Toronto defense that's actively regressing is a wider gap than most 15.5-point lines reflect. Lean Minnesota -15.5 or better.

Toronto wins if Marina Mabrey has an outlier scoring night that Minnesota's defense simply doesn't respect early, the Tempo's transformed offense keeps pace with the Lynx's own faster tempo, and Minnesota shows the kind of letdown that sometimes follows a lopsided first meeting.

Minnesota wins if Collier continues to look like her old self in an expanded role, Miles keeps pushing the pace that has made the Lynx the league's best offense, and Minnesota's defense takes advantage of a Toronto unit that has fallen to last in the league defensively.

Fever Ride a Historic Three-Game Stretch Into Seattle

Indiana Fever @ Seattle Storm | 9:30 PM ET | ESPN

Caitlin Clark's growth from must-watch rookie to the league's most dangerous two-way engine has been the story of Indiana's season, and Seattle has been on the wrong end of that transformation more than once already this year.

Indiana enters Tuesday on a three-game winning streak in which they've outscored opponents by an average of 19 points per game, and Clark just posted a 45-point, 10-assist game against this exact Seattle team on July 17, the first 40-10 game in WNBA history. Indiana leads the league in offensive rating, points per game, and effective field goal percentage. Seattle, by contrast, is 1-12 in clutch games this season, tied for the worst clutch winning percentage since the league started tracking the stat in 2006. Ezi Magbegor is out for Seattle, further thinning a defense that already struggles to contain multiple threats.

DraftKings has Indiana -9.5 on the road, with the total at 184.5. Given the recent margin of victory and Indiana's head-to-head dominance of this exact opponent, the number is arguably light. Lean Indiana -9.5 or better.

Seattle wins if Dominique Malonga has one of her big individual scoring nights and Seattle's shorthanded defense somehow holds up without Magbegor, the Storm avoid the kind of clutch-time collapse that has plagued them all season, and Indiana shows any signs of a letdown after a dominant three-game stretch.

Indiana wins if Clark builds on her career-high performance against this exact opponent, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell provide the secondary scoring that has made Indiana's offense historically efficient, and the Fever's defense continues the improvement that has defined their recent winning streak.

Fire Visit an Aces Team Coming Off a Bad Loss

Portland Fire @ Las Vegas Aces | 10:00 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

Las Vegas enters Tuesday having just lost 100-99 to Washington in its final game before the break, a result that snapped a stretch where the Aces had been rolling. Portland, meanwhile, has covered the spread in seven of its last eight games, and while the Fire have struggled against Western Conference teams with winning records on the road, this specific market has been generous to them lately. A'ja Wilson remains the best player on the floor by a wide margin, and Las Vegas has won 15 straight night games against teams with a losing record, which argues for the favorite. But recency matters, and the Aces have failed to cover in four of their last five home games following a road loss, exactly the situation they're in tonight.

DraftKings has Las Vegas -12.5, with the total at 177.5. Wilson's individual talent still makes Las Vegas the pick to win outright, but the specific ATS trend and Portland's recent cover rate argue for taking the points rather than laying them. Lean Portland +points.

Portland wins if the Fire's recent cover-friendly form continues and they stay competitive deep into the fourth quarter, Bridget Carleton and Carla Leite generate enough offense to keep pace, and Las Vegas shows the same letdown that has followed their last several home losses.

Las Vegas wins if Wilson responds to Sunday's loss with the kind of dominant performance that has defined her season, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray control tempo, and the Aces treat Tuesday as the professional response a team with their talent level should deliver at home.

Liberty Visit a Leaky Sparks Defense

New York Liberty @ Los Angeles Sparks | 10:00 PM ET | WNBA League Pass

New York's rotation remains compromised, missing both Leonie Fiebich and Satou Sabally, and over their recent stretch the Liberty have surrendered 45.1 percent shooting from three and 16.4 fast-break points per game. Los Angeles plays at one of the league's fastest paces and has been bottom-two in defensive net rating over its last five games, bleeding 42.5 points in the paint per contest. Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones should have a runway to operate against that interior defense, but New York's own defensive lapses cut both ways against a Sparks team getting 23.9 points a night from Kelsey Plum.

DraftKings has New York -4.5, with the total at 183.5. The talent gap still favors New York, but their compromised depth and recent tendency to let inferior teams hang around make this closer than the market number, and a letdown loss is a live outcome given how the Liberty have played of late.

Los Angeles wins if Kelsey Plum and Nneka Ogwumike exploit New York's compromised perimeter defense the way the Sparks' pace suggests they can, Los Angeles's frantic tempo forces the kind of mistakes a shorthanded Liberty rotation is prone to, and New York shows the letdown tendency that has defined stretches of their season.

New York wins if Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones take full advantage of a Sparks defense bleeding points in the paint, the Liberty's individual talent gap simply overwhelms Los Angeles's depth issues, and New York avoids the sloppy stretches that have let inferior teams hang around this season.

What to Watch For Tonight.

Tonight's slate is packed with five games with multiple teams looking to make a push for a playoff spot or positioning. Napheesa Collier's return has genuinely reshaped Minnesota's ceiling, and the Lynx-Tempo line may actually be light rather than heavy. Las Vegas coming off a loss to Washington, combined with Portland's recent cover rate, makes that game the clearest lean-the-underdog spot. Indiana's three-game scoring margin against Seattle specifically is the number to watch if you're skeptical of a 9.5-point road favorite. And New York-Los Angeles is a total play first and a side play second, with both defenses genuinely struggling over their last five games.
