The Beginning of the Story

In the beginning, the Great Illuminary opened its doors and the first Illumineers stepped into the Inklands — a luminous world where stories take shape and glimmers of legendary Disney characters answer the call. Everything was new: the shimmering Ink, the wondrous glimmers, the bonds forged across impossible distances. But even in those earliest days of discovery, long before anyone spoke of vines or darkness, the Inklands were more than they appeared. Some glimmers whispered of currents deep beneath the Ink — slow, patient, ancient — waiting for the moment the world above was finally ready to notice.

What Makes It Special

The First Chapter is where Disney Lorcana began. It launched at Gen Con in August 2023 and sold out fast enough that supply shortages became part of the set's origin story before it even hit wide retail. Every mechanic every later set builds on — the six inks, questing for lore, Shift, Song cards — started here, and its Enchanted rares set the visual template every chase card since has followed.

New to This Set

Mechanic debut: Eight core keywords (Bodyguard, Challenger, Evasive, Reckless, Rush, Singer, Ward, Support) — these foundational abilities define how characters interact and carry through every set that follows.

Narrative theme: Illumineers discover they can summon glimmers — legendary versions of Disney characters pulled from across the multiverse into the Illuminary, a vast magical library at the heart of the Inklands.

Top Chase Cards

Elsa - Spirit of Winter (Enchanted) — the original Lorcana grail, and still the outlier: worth more than twice any other Enchanted in the game. Frozen was at its cultural peak when the set launched, and no later chase card has matched her staying power.

Mickey Mouse - Wayward Sorcerer (Enchanted) — the clear second behind Elsa; the Fantasia-themed Mickey doubling as the game's mascot card.

Stitch - Carefree Surfer (Enchanted) — part of the set's most-recognized Enchanteds; Stitch's outsized merchandising profile has kept this pull in demand well beyond the player base.

Notable Secondary Pulls

Belle - Strange but Special (Enchanted) — a franchise-anchor pull that's held value on the strength of Belle's enduring popularity and the card's artwork.

Maleficent - Monstrous Dragon (Legendary) — the set's top villain pull at this rarity, PSA 10 copies trading $800–1,400; a Legendary rather than Enchanted, but a genuinely strong secondary market performer.

Simba - Returned King (Enchanted) — the real Enchanted Simba from this set, tracking $146–360; long the least sought-after Enchanted in the checklist before demand fluctuations pushed its value up.

Pull Rates

Ravensburger has never officially published pull rates. Community estimates have varied since launch, but the strongest consensus — corroborated across four independent sources (Chase Society, LorcanaCollectors, alongmainstreet, and early ScreenRant reporting from the set's 2023 launch) — lands on roughly 1 in 96 packs for Enchanted rarity, the same figure the rest of the Lorcana catalog has settled around.

Pull

Estimated Rate

Enchanted (any)

~1 in 96 packs (roughly one per sealed 4-box case)

Elsa - Spirit of Winter specifically

1 of 12 possible Enchanteds — not independently tracked; buying the single is the practical route for a specific pull

These are community estimates, not official rates. A minority of sources cite figures as low as 1-in-576 or as high as 1-in-144 for this specific set — the 1-in-96 figure represents the best-corroborated consensus, not a guarantee.

How It Compares

There's no prior set to compare The First Chapter against — it's the one everything else in Lorcana is measured relative to. Its lasting relevance comes less from any single mechanic and more from being the game's origin point: the smallest print run of any Lorcana main set to date, never reprinted, which has kept its Enchanteds among the most consistently valuable in the game's history. On our Collector Interest Grade, it lands at A- (84.5), the second-highest score in the full 13-set catalog, on the strength of unmatched nostalgia and enduring chase-card demand.

Total / Grade

84.5 — A-

The First Chapter lands at 84.5. Unlike a single-set launch reaction, this set's reception has been sustained for three years running — sold out at its Gen Con debut, cited repeatedly across the hobby press as the origin point every later set gets measured against, and still commanding first-set premium pricing in 2026. Nostalgia maxes out as the literal starting point of the game, and Chase Card Desirability stays strong on the back of Elsa's enduring grail status. Competitive Relevance remains dated — most First Chapter staples have rotated out of Core, with their legacy now living mainly in Infinity.

Special Notes

The First Chapter rotated out of Core Constructed in September 2025 with the release of Fabled, but remains fully legal in the non-rotating Infinity format. Its Enchanted cards, particularly Elsa, are frequently cited as the benchmark against which every subsequent Lorcana chase card gets measured.

Fun Facts / Trivia

The First Chapter's Enchanted cards pull at an estimated 1 in 96 packs — sources vary on the exact figure, but this is the best-corroborated consensus (see Pull Rates above).

Scoring Methodology: The Collector Interest Grade for Lorcana set overviews is calculated from five weighted factors — Community Reception (30%), Chase Card Desirability (25%), Competitive Relevance/Playability (20%), Artistic/Design Merit (15%), and Franchise/Nostalgia Pull (10%) — scored 0–100 based on documented facts and sourced critical/community reception, mapped to a letter grade. This grade reflects hobby and collecting interest only and is not investment advice.
