The two quarterbacks coming off major injuries traded blows early — Mahomes scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown on Kansas City's opening drive, and Bo Nix answered with a 19-yard strike to Evan Engram to tie it at 7. From there, it was almost entirely Kansas City. Rashee Rice's 13-yard touchdown grab made it 14-7 before halftime, and Kenneth Walker III broke the game open in the third quarter, bursting through the left edge for a 60-yard touchdown run that made it 21-10 and effectively ended the competitive portion of the night.
The pass-rush matchup our preview flagged never developed as expected. Denver's defense, which led the NFL in sacks the last two seasons, managed only two sacks of Mahomes all night. Instead, it was Kansas City's patchwork line — including undrafted rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson making his first career start — that held up, while Denver's offense absorbed four sacks and lost the turnover battle 2-1. Mahomes finished 15-of-27 for 184 yards with two total touchdowns (one through the air, one on the ground) and an interception; Walker added a second score on a 2-yard catch in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Nix's final line — 17-of-28 for 131 yards, a touchdown, and a pick — was serviceable but never got enough help. Denver's offense totaled just 176 yards and 15 rushing attempts on the night, a quiet finish to a Week 1 that opened with the Broncos as reigning division champions and closed with Kansas City looking like it wants the title back.
