NFL Recap & Results | October 4, 2026

Week 4's Sunday slate ended Buffalo's unbeaten start, rescued the Rams' season, and sent another wave of stars to the sideline. New England beat the Bills on a one-handed Efton Chism III touchdown with under two minutes left, and Josh Allen's late interception sealed it, on the same day Allen set the franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage. The Rams scored 14 fourth-quarter points to steal a win in Philadelphia, and the Chiefs held off the Raiders to stay perfect, though Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice both left injured. Only the Vikings, 49ers, and Chiefs are still unbeaten. Here's how it all went down, plus a look at how the preview predictions and season-to-date record held up.

Patriots Stun the Unbeaten Bills on a One-Handed Chism Grab

New England Patriots 29, Buffalo Bills 26

New England struck first on a 14-yard Drake Maye touchdown pass to Romeo Doubs, Buffalo answered with 17 points in the second quarter to lead 17-14 at the half, and Maye put the Patriots back in front on a 2-yard pass to Doubs in the third. Allen's 34-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman gave Buffalo a 26-21 lead with 4:33 left, but Maye answered with an eight-play, 73-yard drive. On third-and-5 he rolled right and lofted a 23-yard touchdown to Chism, who caught it one-handed and kept control falling to the ground. Rhamondre Stevenson converted the two-point try for a 29-26 lead with 1:50 left.

Maye shook off a rough first half that included an interception and a lost fumble to finish 22-of-37 for 269 yards and three touchdowns, adding 54 rushing yards on eight scrambles. After Allen forced a deep throw that was intercepted, a heave he did not need to make with time to at least work toward field goal range, Maye hit Hunter Henry for a first down to run out the clock. Doubs finished with six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns, and New England posted season highs of 29 points and 405 total yards after scoring 26 in its previous two games combined.

Allen was 23-of-33 for 253 yards with a touchdown pass and a 2-yard touchdown run just before halftime, his 88th career touchdown from scrimmage, which broke the franchise record he had shared with Hall of Famers Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas. It was also his 86th rushing touchdown, tying Priest Holmes for 16th on the NFL's career list. Coleman added 116 yards after D.J. Moore left with an injury, but a Buffalo defense that allowed 26 first downs could not get off the field when it counted, and the Bills fell to 3-1.

Rams Score 14 in the Fourth to Steal One in Philadelphia

Los Angeles Rams 24, Philadelphia Eagles 20

For three quarters this looked like another Rams collapse. Two Matthew Stafford interceptions fed 10 first-half Eagles points, Philadelphia led 20-10 at the half, and neither team scored in the third quarter. Midway through the fourth, the Eagles had a chance to go up three scores, but Jalen Hurts missed Darius Cooper on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Los Angeles answered with a 10-play, 98-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard Kyren Williams touchdown, stopped Philadelphia on its 12th straight third down, and got the ball back. Williams scored again from 7 yards out with 1:17 left, and a Hurts fourth-down pass fell incomplete to end it.

Stafford finished 32-of-51 for 317 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, but Puka Nacua was back after missing two games with 9 catches for 125 yards, and Williams piled up 147 total yards on 26 touches. Los Angeles outgained Philadelphia 415 yards to 172 and blitzed Hurts on more than 60% of his dropbacks, sacking him four times. The Eagles went 0-for-12 on third down, their most attempts without a conversion since at least 1991, and averaged 3.0 yards per play. Hurts finished 12-of-27 for 93 yards, his fewest in a game he started and finished.

The injury toll made it worse. Saquon Barkley hurt his right hamstring early and did not return, and Philadelphia also lost cornerback Quinyon Mitchell (knee), edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (ankle), and running back Tank Bigsby, who needed help off the field late. The Eagles had already ruled out DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and Zack Baun, with right tackle Lane Johnson a surprise inactive for personal reasons. At 2-2, Philadelphia heads to London next. The Rams, who also lost receiver Konata Mumpfield to a shoulder injury, are 2-2 and back in the NFC West race.

Chiefs Stay Perfect, but Lose Thornton and Rice

Kansas City Chiefs 30, Las Vegas Raiders 27

The only two unbeaten AFC West teams traded blows until Kansas City found its big plays. Kenneth Walker III's 76-yard run to close the third quarter, the longest in the NFL this season, set up Patrick Mahomes's second touchdown pass to Thornton and a 17-13 lead. Las Vegas retook the lead at 19-17, but Mahomes beat an all-out blitz for a 55-yard completion to Thornton on third-and-5, and Walker punched in a 2-yard touchdown with 3:21 left. A Raiders kickoff fumble turned into another Kansas City touchdown, and Kirk Cousins' 20-yard touchdown to Brock Bowers and a two-point conversion made it 30-27 with 1:46 left. Xavier Worthy recovered the onside kick and the Raiders would receive the ball back with 1:16 remaining on the clock, but Cousins was intercepted near midfield with 0:10 on the clock to end it.

Walker ran 22 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns, his second 170-yard game in four weeks as a Chief. Mahomes was 15-of-30 for 225 yards and two touchdowns under heavy pressure, and five plays of 20 or more yards accounted for 235 of Kansas City's 399 yards. Cousins threw for 365 yards, with Bowers, Michael Mayer, and Ian Thomas combining for 16 catches, 200 yards, and two touchdowns, but the Raiders took their first loss and fell to 3-1.

The win came at a cost. Thornton, who had five catches for 111 yards and both of Mahomes's touchdown passes, was carted off with a left ankle injury after the 55-yard catch, his leg placed in an air cast. Andy Reid said afterward that it "doesn't look good," and no official diagnosis had been announced when this recap was written. Rice left in the first quarter with a right hamstring injury that Reid described as a tweak, and the Chiefs now have a bye week to see where he stands. Through four weeks, the two receivers had combined for 24 catches, 409 yards, and three touchdowns.

The Rest of the Slate

Colts 30, Commanders 13: Jonathan Taylor ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns in London, giving him the most rushing yards in international game history, while Washington lost Marcus Mariota to a knee injury in the first quarter and finished with seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis.

Ravens 24, Titans 18: Lamar Jackson left late in the second quarter with an ankle injury after going 15-of-20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, and Baltimore did not score again after a 64-yard Tyler Loop field goal as Tyler Huntley finished. Derrick Henry ran for a touchdown against his former team, and Tennessee fell to 0-4.

Bears 23, Jets 12: Tyson Bagent threw for a career-high 268 yards in his first start in nearly three years, and Kyle Monangai ran 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns as Chicago outgained New York 492-157 with Caleb Williams out.

Jaguars 22, Bengals 17: Ja'Marr Chase left in the first half with a concussion, and Joe Burrow threw two interceptions as Jacksonville improved to 3-1.

Cowboys 34, Texans 30: CeeDee Lamb caught 17 passes for 189 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, one of four players in NFL history with at least 17 catches, 180 yards, and a score in a game. Nico Collins returned with 7 catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns, but Houston fell to 0-4.

Giants 36, Cardinals 24: Deonte Banks closed it with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown as New York moved to 3-1, though Jameis Winston threw two ugly second-half interceptions along the way.

Packers 17, Buccaneers 14: Tampa Bay fell to 0-4 with undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels making his first start for the injured Baker Mayfield, who could miss up to six weeks. Green Bay survived two fourth-quarter turnovers but lost linebacker Edgerrin Cooper to a non-contact Achilles injury.

Vikings 15, Dolphins 10: Minnesota improved to 4-0 on five Will Reichard field goals without scoring a touchdown, even without Justin Jefferson, who was out with an ankle sprain. Miami fell to 0-4.

Seahawks 30, Chargers 23: Los Angeles fell to 0-4 after Justin Herbert threw two interceptions, one on the game's first play, and lost a fumble in the final minute. The Chargers also lost Rashawn Slater (ankle), Joe Alt (neck), Donte Jackson (hamstring), and Ladd McConkey (foot) during a game with 30 penalties for 280 yards.

49ers 24, Broncos 14: George Kittle's 56-yard touchdown on a screen put it away as San Francisco improved to 4-0, with Brock Purdy throwing two touchdowns without an interception.

Panthers 32, Lions 26: Tetairoa McMillan caught 14 passes for a career-high 192 yards and two touchdowns from Bryce Young (29-of-41, 329 yards), and Chuba Hubbard ran for 122 yards and two scores as Carolina, without receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, moved to 2-2 on Sunday Night Football. Jared Goff threw for 412 yards, but Detroit settled for four field goals, turned it over on downs at the Carolina 15, and fell to 2-2.

A League Battered by Injuries

Sunday's list is long. Ja'Marr Chase (concussion), Marcus Mariota (knee), and Lamar Jackson (ankle) all left their games early, Saquon Barkley (hamstring) went down early in Philadelphia, and Kansas City lost Tyquan Thornton to an ankle injury that looked severe and Rashee Rice to a hamstring. Beyond those, Green Bay's Edgerrin Cooper (Achilles) was ruled out, the Chargers lost four starters during the game, Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell (knee), edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (ankle), and running back Tank Bigsby were hurt, and Bills receiver D.J. Moore, Commanders defender Charles Omenihu (groin), and Rams receiver Konata Mumpfield (shoulder) also left.

Many of the biggest names never played at all. Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Baker Mayfield, Justin Jefferson, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and Aaron Donald were all out, Carolina played Sunday night without receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, and Derwin James and several Broncos defenders sat too. Four weeks in, the injury report is shaping nearly every game, and the league is down to three unbeaten teams (Minnesota, San Francisco, and Kansas City) and five winless ones (Tennessee, Houston, Tampa Bay, Miami, and the Chargers).

Separation at the Top, Muddy at the Bottom.

Week 4 trimmed the unbeaten list to three teams after Buffalo and Las Vegas took their first losses, while New England and Los Angeles both climbed back to 2-2 with comeback wins. The Chiefs moved to 4-0 behind a record-setting day from Kenneth Walker III, though the cost of staying perfect may be two of Mahomes's top receivers.

Star of the Day: Kenneth Walker III, RB, Kansas City

22 carries | 177 yards | 2 rushing TD | 76-yard run

Drake Maye's three-touchdown rally against the unbeaten Bills, Efton Chism III's one-handed grab, and CeeDee Lamb's 17-catch, 189-yard day all made cases of their own, but Walker's 76-yard run swung a slugfest in Las Vegas, and he became one of three players, with Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson, to post multiple 170-yard games in a team's first four games of a season.

Dud of the Day: Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers

19-of-32 passing | 189 yards | 1 TD | 2 INT | 4 sacks | lost fumble

Josh Allen's late interception and Philadelphia's 0-for-12 third-down day were both in the conversation, but Herbert throwing an interception on the game's first play, adding a second, and then losing a fumble in the final minute of a one-score game for a team that fell to 0-4 is the clearer dud.

How We Did: Checking the Card

Sunday's 14 games went 5-7-2 on sides and 6-8 on totals.

Kansas City @ Las Vegas: The card leaned Las Vegas +4.5 (Lean) and the over at 47.5 (Lean), pointing to the Raiders' No. 1 pressure rate against a Chiefs line starting an undrafted rookie at left tackle. Kansas City won by three, so Las Vegas cleared the number, and the teams combined for 57 points, well past the total. Both leans cleared.

Los Angeles @ Philadelphia: The card leaned Los Angeles -3.5 (Toss-up) and the under at 42.5 (Lean), citing Nacua's return and two shaky offenses. The Rams won by four to clear the side, but the total reached 44 once Los Angeles scored 14 in the fourth, so the under missed by 1.5. One cleared, one missed.

New England @ Buffalo: The card leaned Buffalo -7 (Lean) and the over at 50.5 (Lean), driven by the injury report: Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore out against the reigning MVP. New England won outright, so the side missed, while 55 points cleared the total. One cleared, one missed.

By tier on the three full cards: Lean 3-2, Toss-up 1-0.

The rest of the slate, winner first:

Colts 30, Commanders 13: IND -4.5: Cleared · Over 46.5: Missed

Giants 36, Cardinals 24: ARI -2.5: Missed · Under 44.5: Missed

Jaguars 22, Bengals 17: CIN -2.5: Missed · Over 51.5: Missed

Cowboys 34, Texans 30: HOU -3: Missed · Under 48.5: Missed

Bears 23, Jets 12: CHI -3.5: Cleared · Under 43.5: Cleared

Packers 17, Buccaneers 14: GB -3: Push (tie) · Under 38.5: Cleared

Ravens 24, Titans 18: BAL -11.5: Missed · Under 41.5: Missed, by a half-point

Vikings 15, Dolphins 10: MIN -10: Missed · Under 38.5: Cleared

Seahawks 30, Chargers 23: SEA -7: Push (tie) · Under 42.5: Missed

49ers 24, Broncos 14: SF -3: Cleared · Over 48.5: Missed

Panthers 32, Lions 26: DET -3.5: Missed · Over 51.5: Cleared

The headline takeaway: the sides were decided by thin margins, with two landing exactly on the number (Packers -3 and Seahawks -7), recorded as ties, while totals took the bigger hit, with Cowboys-Texans (64 points) and Giants-Cardinals (60) landing far past their lines.
