Love Throws for 288 and Three Scores, and Green Bay Survives Three Turnovers to Beat Carolina on a Short Week

Carolina Panthers 19, Green Bay Packers 27

The game was 19 seconds old when it turned the first time. Coleman Owen took the opening kickoff out to the Green Bay 27 and fumbled it, Jackson Kuwatch forced it and Nick Hampton recovered at the 29, and Carolina turned eight yards in six plays into Ryan Fitzgerald's 39-yard field goal at 11:43 of the first. Green Bay answered with an eight-play, 56-yard drive and Love's 12-yard touchdown to Tucker Kraft at 5:08, but Trey Smack's extra point failed and it was 6-3. Carolina went 65 yards in 13 plays to open the second, Chuba Hubbard scoring from a yard out at 14:57 for a 10-6 lead, and then Green Bay gave it away again: Christian Watson fumbled after an 8-yard catch at 12:32, Nick Scott forced it and Bobby Okereke recovered at the Carolina 37.

The Packers' next three possessions decided it. Love hit Watson deep down the middle for 53 yards at 9:19 of the second, and Jacobs went in from the 1 at 6:33 to cap a 90-yard drive, 13-10. Young's next pass was picked off by Ty'Ron Hopper at the Carolina 44 at 5:23, and eight plays later Love found Matthew Golden from 24 yards at 1:46 for a 20-10 halftime lead. Carolina went for it on fourth down at the Green Bay 49 at 12:22 of the third and Hubbard got one yard, and Green Bay went 50 yards in eight plays, Love's 4-yard touchdown to Jacobs at 7:30 making it 27-10. Fitzgerald's 50-yarder at 4:07 cut it to 27-13.

Carolina had its chances late. Zakee Wheatley intercepted Love at the Carolina 2 at 14:37 of the fourth, and the Panthers went 70 yards in 12 plays, Young hitting Jalen Coker for a 26-yard touchdown at 5:37; the two-point pass failed and it stayed 27-19. The next drive died on fourth down at 2:46 with an incompletion to Tetairoa McMillan, Green Bay punted it back, and the last snap at 0:04 ended with a lateral to Coker and a fumble that Brenton Cox Jr. recovered. Love finished 30-of-41 for 288 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and no sacks, Watson caught eight for 113, Golden seven for 79 and a score, and Kraft six for 53 and a score; Jacobs ran 21 times for 39 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 13 and another. Green Bay converted 9 of 16 third downs and all three red-zone trips and outgained Carolina 354-258. Young was 23-of-41 for 209 yards with a touchdown and an interception and was sacked six times for 33 yards, six different Packers getting one; Hubbard ran 22 times for 81 yards and a score and caught seven passes, and McMillan had six catches for 58. Carolina was 5-of-18 on third down. Green Bay is 5-3; Carolina is 3-4.

THE CARD, GRADED · CAR @ GB

Side: Green Bay -3.5 (Toss-up) · closing number GB -3.5 · Green Bay won by 8, 4.5 past the number · cleared

Total: Under 47.5 (Lean) · closing number 47.5 · 46 points, 1.5 under the number · cleared

The number never moved: Green Bay opened at 3.5 and closed there, and the matchup, Jacobs against the league's worst run defense, went nowhere at 1.9 a carry while Love and the turnovers did the work instead. The under was built on Green Bay's games going under five times in seven and two patched offensive lines, and six sacks of Young plus a missed extra point and a failed two-point try kept it to 46.

Love and the Turnover Margin Carry Green Bay, and a Short-Week Thursday Finishes a Point and a Half Under the Number

Green Bay moves to 5-3 four days after losing at Detroit, and Carolina drops to 3-4 with two straight losses. The pattern was what each team did with the other's mistakes: Green Bay turned Hopper's interception and the fourth-down stop into 14 points, while Carolina got a field goal out of the opening-kickoff fumble, punted three plays after the second fumble, and needed 12 plays to turn Wheatley's interception at its own 2 into six.

Star of the Night: Jordan Love, QB, Green Bay Packers

30-of-41 | 288 YDS | 3 TD | 1 INT | 0 SACKS

Christian Watson's eight catches for 113 yards, including the 53-yarder that flipped the game, and Chuba Hubbard's 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries behind a patched line were the other cases. Love played behind a line missing its center and right guard, was not sacked once, and threw touchdowns to three different receivers.

Dud of the Night: Bryce Young, QB, Carolina Panthers

23-of-41 | 209 YDS | 1 TD | 1 INT | 6 SACKS | 5.1 YDS/ATT

Josh Jacobs' 1.9 yards a carry on 21 attempts and Trey Smack's missed extra point were the Green Bay entries. Young was sacked six times for 33 yards, threw the interception that set up Green Bay's third touchdown, and his one touchdown drive took 12 plays and came with Carolina already down 14 in the fourth.
