NFL Recap | October 19, 2026
Week 6 closed the way the number said it might: close. San Francisco built a 20-3 halftime lead on two Christian McCaffrey plunges, then spent the second half watching Jayden Daniels chip at it, and the 49ers are 6-0 only because Washington's last two drives ended on downs and on a sack as the clock ran out. Here's how it went down, the card graded, and where the record stands through six weeks.
McCaffrey's Two Short Scores Hold Up as Washington Runs Out of Downs
Washington Commanders 17, San Francisco 49ers 23
San Francisco took the opening kickoff 64 yards in nine plays, and Brock Purdy found George Kittle from 11 yards out at 10:53 of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Washington answered with a 51-yard Drew Stevens field goal at 8:48, and the 49ers went right back down the field, 72 yards in eight plays, for McCaffrey's first 1-yard touchdown at 4:09. Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point, so it was 13-3 after one. Washington went for it on fourth down at 13:02 of the second quarter and came up empty, McCaffrey gave one back with a fumble at the Washington 21 that Frankie Luvu recovered at 9:11, and then the 49ers put together the drive that decided the night: 14 plays, 69 yards, 6:13 off the clock, and McCaffrey's second 1-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half. Quarter scores were 13-3 and 7-0, 20-3 at the break.
Pineiro's 33-yard field goal at 5:56 of the third made it 23-3, and that was the last time San Francisco scored. Daniels took Washington 65 yards in 11 plays and found Stefon Diggs from a yard out with 15 seconds left in the third, 23-10, then went 80 yards in 10 plays and found Rachaad White from 9 yards at 9:22 of the fourth, 23-17. The 49ers went three-and-out after Odafe Oweh sacked Purdy, and Washington started at its own 22 with 7:46 left. Daniels found Treylon Burks for 30 yards to the San Francisco 31 at 5:03, and Jeremy McNichols ran 31 yards for what looked like the go-ahead touchdown at 4:19, only for a face mask on Washington to wipe it out. The drive stalled from there: a sack split by Romello Height and Jaden Dugger at 3:01 was offset by an illegal contact penalty, and Daniels's fourth-down throw to Burks at the two-minute warning was broken up by Malik Mustapha. Turnover on downs at 1:54.
Washington got one more shot. San Francisco's three-and-out ended with a 49-yard Corliss Waitman punt and a fair catch interference penalty that set the Commanders up at their own 46 with 52 seconds left. Daniels found White for 9 and Antonio Williams for 17 to the San Francisco 28 at 0:37, then an intentional grounding call at 0:21 cost Washington 12 yards and a 10-second runoff, and Keion White and Height split a sack for minus-18 at 0:06. Game over. Purdy finished 21-of-29 for 264 yards and a touchdown, McCaffrey had 64 yards and two scores on 16 carries plus nine catches for 53, and Mike Evans caught three passes for 94 yards, including a 54-yarder. Daniels was 29-of-40 for 300 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions but was sacked four times, Chig Okonkwo caught seven for 69, and Washington ran 17 times for 53 yards and converted 3 of 12 third downs. San Francisco is 6-0, and Washington is 1-4-1 and 0-3 on the road.
THE CARD, GRADED · WAS @ SF
Side: Washington +7.5 (Toss-up) · closing SF -7.5 · San Francisco won by 6, a point and a half inside the number · cleared
Total: Under 52.5 (Lean) · closing 51.5 · 40 points, 11.5 under the number · cleared
The side was driven by the injury report, and the injury report held: without Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel, San Francisco scored once after halftime, and a healthy Daniels kept a touchdown spread close. The under was driven by thin receiver depth and wind, and 23-3 after three quarters never threatened it.
