Our number had this within two points, and for 47 minutes it was: Utah led inside the final five and the Lakers' margin came on Dončić's last two threes and four free throws. The under was the market's assumption of two good offenses against our 231, and both offenses were better than that, Utah's for one quarter and the Lakers' for three.
Minnesota Scores 35 in the Third and Buries a Toronto Team Without Leonard
Toronto Raptors 94, Minnesota Timberwolves 117
Kawhi Leonard sat with left knee swelling, and Toronto led for 17 seconds. RJ Barrett's free throw at 10:00 of the first made it 3-2, LaMelo Ball's step-back three at 9:43 answered, and Minnesota led 32-21 after one and by 15 at 34-49 on Anthony Edwards' pull-up at 3:29 of the second. Toronto made the half interesting: Ja'Kobe Walter's three at 3:14, Immanuel Quickley's at 2:26 and Walter's again at 2:03 cut it to 43-51, and Collin Murray-Boyles' free throw with 10 seconds left sent the Raptors in down 47-55.
Then Minnesota opened the third with 11 of the first 13 points: Ball's layup at 11:40, Jaden McDaniels' layup and free throw at 11:08, Edwards' step-back three at 10:13 and Jonathan Kuminga's three at 9:40 made it 66-49. Ayo Dosunmu's three at 7:22, Joan Beringer's alley-oop at 6:21, Terrence Shannon Jr.'s three at 5:11 and Ball's step-back at 4:41 pushed it to 83-57, and Rudy Gobert's alley-oop at 1:00 sent the Wolves into the fourth up 90-62 after a 35-15 quarter. The lead reached 32 at 109-77 on Beringer's layup at 4:46 of the fourth, and both benches finished it.
Edwards scored 26 on 10-of-18 in 28 minutes. Ball had 15 points and eight assists in 17 minutes, making four of five threes, and was plus-33. Shannon scored 15 on 5-of-6 off the bench, McDaniels had 14 with three blocks, Kuminga scored 13, and Gobert had 8 points and 13 rebounds. Minnesota shot 56 percent and made 15 of 31 threes, and turned it over 23 times without it mattering. For Toronto, Walter scored 22 with five threes, Barrett had 20 on 9-of-21, and Quickley scored 19. Scottie Barnes went 0-of-12, 0-of-5 from three, with three rebounds, three assists and four steals in 28 minutes. The Raptors shot 38 percent and made 10 of 38 threes. Minnesota is 3-0; Toronto is 2-1.

Our number had Minnesota by two in a game the market called nearly even, and the market moved two points toward the Wolves by tip, likely once Leonard was ruled out; the margin made the movement irrelevant. The under was the number too, 225 against a 231.5 that came down to 228.5, and both teams had gone under in both of their games; a third quarter of 35 did not change that.
Detroit Scores the First 15 Points and Philadelphia Never Gets Within Three
Detroit Pistons 106, Philadelphia 76ers 93
With Joel Embiid resting the second night of a back-to-back and VJ Edgecombe out with an abdominal injury, Philadelphia did not score a field goal until 8:31 of the first quarter. By then Detroit led 15-1: John Collins' tip-in at 11:21, Cade Cunningham's step-back three at 10:38, Paul Reed's basket at 10:01, Collins' three at 9:43, Cunningham's layup at 9:19 and Daniss Jenkins' free throw at 8:54 and jumper at 8:50. Duncan Robinson's three at 7:27 made it 20-4, Cunningham's floater at 5:46 made it 25-7, and Detroit led 34-22 after one. Cunningham's turnaround at 1:48 and free throw at 1:33 of the second put the lead at 21, 56-35, before Dean Wade's three and LeBron James' basket cut it to 56-44 at the half.
Philadelphia had its run early in the third. Jaylen Brown's three at 10:49, Wade's layup at 10:11 and James' basket at 9:49 made it 58-53, Tyrese Maxey's layup at 7:55 made it 61-56, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's jumper at 7:11 made it 64-58. Cunningham answered each time, with a step-back three at 7:31 and another three at 6:48 for 67-58, and Kevin Huerter's three at 4:22 made it 72-63. Detroit led 79-69 after three. Maxey's dunk at 9:18 of the fourth cut it to 82-78, the closest Philadelphia came in the second half; Reed's layups at 8:37 and 8:00 made it 86-78, Robinson's three at 5:57 made it 92-82, and after Maxey's step-back three at 5:38 cut it to 92-85, Jenkins' free throws at 4:36 and three at 1:03 closed it.
Cunningham had 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists with two steals and two blocks. Robinson scored 21 on 5-of-9 from three, Jenkins had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Collins had 16 and 11, and Reed, starting at center, added 8 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Adem Bona had 6 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in 25 minutes. The 76ers made 7 of 27 threes and shot 40 percent. Detroit is 3-0; Philadelphia is 3-1.

The card said our number did not account for Embiid, Duren or the back-to-back, and the market did: it moved four points toward Detroit between the preview and tip, from Philadelphia by 2.5 to Detroit by 1.5. The lean cleared against either number. The over was a Toss-up at 226.5, and two short-handed frontcourts and a 7-of-27 night from three for Philadelphia left it 29.5 short.

Fifty-Two for Dončić, Five 3-0 Teams, and Five Unders.
Sunday sorted the early standings: the Lakers, Timberwolves, Pistons, Thunder and Grizzlies are all 3-0, and the Knicks, Nets and Kings are all 0-3. The pattern was defense, or at least missing: five of the seven games finished under the closing total, four of them by 11 or more, with Toronto, Philadelphia, New York and the Clippers each held to 102 or fewer. The two that went over were Indiana's 136 in Brooklyn and the game with a 52-point night in it.
Star of the Night: Luka Dončić, G, Los Angeles Lakers
52 PTS | 17-of-30 FG | 8-of-18 3PT | 10-of-11 FT | 8 REB | 10 AST | 38 MIN
Zach LaVine's 37 in Sacramento, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 34 in a seven-point win, Ty Jerome's 31 with 14-of-14 from the line and Austin Reaves' 29 beside Dončić all had a case. Dončić scored 52 with 10 assists, tied the game at 116 with a step-back three, took the lead with a free throw 32 seconds later, and made the two threes that put it away, so he is the clearer story.
Dud of the Night: Scottie Barnes, F, Toronto
0 PTS | 0-of-12 FG | 0-of-5 3PT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 4 STL | 28 MIN | -27
Jaylen Brown's 5-of-20 in Philadelphia, Rui Hachimura's 2-of-11 in Oklahoma City and Michael Porter Jr.'s 4-of-13 in Brooklyn were in the conversation, but Brown still scored 16 and Porter 10. Barnes, starting with Kawhi Leonard out, missed all 12 of his shots and all five of his threes in a game Toronto lost by 23.
