NBA Recap & Results | October 23, 2026

Friday was the first full board of the season, twelve games from a 4:00 PM ET tip in Milwaukee to four late ones out West. Jayson Tatum scored 16 of his 36 in the third quarter to settle the Knicks-Celtics rivalry game, Detroit led Miami from the first basket and spoiled Giannis Antetokounmpo's home debut, and Amen Thompson blocked Victor Wembanyama's game-tying layup with less than a second left to give Houston a 114-110 win in Austin. Atlanta won by 47 in Charlotte, Utah beat New Orleans by a point, Memphis came from eight down in the final three minutes to spoil Golden State's home opener, and the Lakers held off the Clippers in the first Battle of L.A. of the season. Here's how it went down, plus a look at how the card and the season-to-date record held up.

Tatum's 16-Point Third Quarter Settles the Rivalry Game

New York Knicks 103, Boston Celtics 107

The first half was even. New York led 27-26 after one quarter, the teams traded the lead through the second, and Paul George's three at the second-quarter buzzer sent Boston in up 50-49. Then Jayson Tatum took over. He scored 16 points in the third quarter alone, Boston won the period 33-24, and a Tatum driving dunk with 34.2 seconds left in the third made it 83-73. The lead reached 12 at 86-74 with 11:02 left.

New York made it a game late. Josh Hart's three from 27 feet cut it to 99-96 with 2:26 left, and Jalen Brunson's pull-up with 1:41 to go made it 99-98. Tatum answered both times: a 19-footer at 1:24 for 101-98, an 18-foot jumper at 49.7 seconds for 103-98, then a 25-foot three with 30.2 seconds left that made it 106-100. Miles McBride's three with 13.9 seconds left got the Knicks within three, and Payton Pritchard's free throw closed it at 107-103.

Tatum finished with 36 points on 14-of-26, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals. George had 15 with seven rebounds, Neemias Queta scored 15 off the bench, and Derrick White added 12 points and six assists. For New York, Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 and 10, OG Anunoby went for 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, McBride made six of eight threes for 20, and Brunson scored 19 on 7-of-17. The Knicks shot 16-of-40 from three and turned it over 16 times to Boston's 10. Boston is 1-1; New York is 0-2.

Detroit Leads From the First Basket and Spoils Giannis's Home Debut

Detroit Pistons 128, Miami Heat 111

John Collins made a three 44 seconds in to make it 3-0, and Miami never led. The Pistons scored 41 in the first quarter and took a 41-26 lead into the second. The Heat got as close as eight at 43-35 with 9:11 left in the half, and that was the high-water mark. Detroit led 65-53 at the break, won the third quarter 38-27, and a 23-point lead at 101-78 with 1:18 left in the third put it away. The Heat won a fourth quarter played mostly by the benches 31-25.

Detroit shot 53 percent and made 18 of 38 threes, with 34 assists and 22 fast-break points. Collins led with 23 on 5-of-6 from deep, Paul Reed had 19 and 11 off the bench, Duncan Robinson made five threes for 17, and Cade Cunningham had 16 points and eight assists against seven turnovers. Davion Mitchell scored 18, Bam Adebayo fouled out with four points in 23 minutes, and Klay Thompson went 2-of-11, all from three. Miami attempted 51 threes and made 15. Detroit is 2-0; Miami is 0-2.

Amen Thompson Blocks Wembanyama at the Horn, and Houston Holds On in Austin

Houston Rockets 114, San Antonio Spurs 110

The Spurs played their first Austin game of the season at Moody Center, and Kevin Durant, the former Texas star, drew his share of the crowd. He and De'Aaron Fox, cleared to play through a wrist sprain, got tangled up in the opening minutes. Houston led 32-27 after one quarter, and the half closed with a San Antonio burst of nine points in three trips, a Wembanyama three-point play, a Julian Champagnie corner three and a Wembanyama dunk-and-foul, before Fred VanVleet's long three at the halftime buzzer. The Rockets were up 75-68 midway through the third.

Alperen Şengün scored eight straight Houston points in the fourth, muscling inside for layups and free throws, and Durant's three with 1:34 left was the biggest shot of the night. Dylan Harper's driving dunk cut it to two with 46 seconds to go. On the next trip down, Wembanyama banked in a long three, but it did not count because Mitch Johnson had called timeout with five seconds left. Out of the timeout, Wembanyama drove for a tying layup and Thompson rejected it with less than a second remaining. VanVleet's two free throws set the final.

Şengün led Houston with 29, Durant had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Thompson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with the block. Wembanyama bounced back from his 1-of-13 opener with 25 points on 9-of-21, 13 rebounds and two blocks, and Harper added 20. Houston is 2-0; San Antonio is 0-2.

The Rest of the Slate

Bulls 132, Bucks 125: Milwaukee led 32-17 after one quarter of the only afternoon game, and Chicago answered with 44 points in the second and closed it at the line, 28-of-30 for the game. Tyler Herro scored 34 for the Bucks.

Hawks 128, Hornets 81: Atlanta took the lead for good at 11-9 in the first quarter and led by as many as 49, and the 47-point final is the largest margin of the young season. Dyson Daniels had seven of the Hawks' 17 steals.

Mavericks 121, Pacers 105: Dallas scored 44 in the first quarter and led 77-43 at the half, then lost Cooper Flagg late in the second quarter to a shoulder injury. Kyrie Irving scored 24 on five threes.

Timberwolves 115, Magic 93: Minnesota held Orlando to 15 points in the third quarter and won the glass 61-43 on a night Anthony Edwards went 5-of-23. Wendell Carter Jr. had 20 on 8-of-9 for the Magic.

Raptors 112, Wizards 102: Washington erased a 17-point deficit to get within 78-77 late in the third, and Kawhi Leonard and Scottie Barnes scored the key baskets in the final three minutes. Barnes had 28 points and 14 rebounds.

Jazz 120, Pelicans 119: Jaren Jackson Jr. had 24 and 10, rookie Darryn Peterson made the go-ahead free throws with 50.5 seconds left, and Dejounte Murray missed a pull-up just before the horn. New Orleans gave up a fourth-quarter lead for the second straight game.

Grizzlies 111, Warriors 108: Golden State led 106-98 with 2:14 left, and Memphis closed on a 13-2 run to spoil the Warriors' home opener and move to 2-0. Golden State is 0-2 despite getting Brandin Podziemski back.

Lakers 125, Clippers 117: The Lakers led by double digits for much of the second half and held on, with Austin Reaves scoring 26 and Luka Doncic adding 23 and seven assists. The Clippers turned it over 24 times.

Trail Blazers 128, Kings 120: Sacramento led 64-59 at the half, and Portland took over with a 44-26 third quarter to move to 2-0.

Injuries and Absences

Cooper Flagg left Dallas's win late in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return, and no diagnosis has been announced. Jalen Duren (thigh) and Paolo Banchero (ankle) were listed day-to-day after their games. De'Aaron Fox (wrist) and Keldon Johnson (mouth) were cleared for San Antonio, and Brandin Podziemski returned from back soreness to start for Golden State. Charlotte remained without Kon Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams, and Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance stayed out for the Spurs.

A Block at the Horn, a One-Point Finish, and a 47-Point Rout.

The first full board had a little of everything: three games decided in the final minutes, in Austin, Salt Lake City and San Francisco, and blowouts in Charlotte, Dallas and Orlando. Detroit, Houston, Atlanta, Minnesota, Toronto, Memphis and Portland moved to 2-0, while New York, Miami, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Orlando, New Orleans, Golden State and Sacramento fell to 0-2. Saturday is an eight-game night.

Star of the Night: Jayson Tatum, F, Boston

36 PTS | 9 REB | 7 AST | 3 STL | 14-of-26 FG

Giannis Antetokounmpo's 36 and 12 and Alperen Şengün's 29 in Austin made cases of their own, but Tatum scored 16 in the quarter that decided the game and then answered every Knicks run in the last two minutes with three straight jumpers, so he is the clearer story.

Dud of the Night: Brandon Miller, F, Charlotte

6 PTS | 2-of-14 FG | 1-of-11 3PT

Anthony Edwards's 5-of-23 and Klay Thompson's 2-of-11 were in the conversation, but Edwards's team won by 22, and Miller going 1-of-11 from three as the healthy scorer Charlotte needed most, in a 47-point home loss, is the clearer dud.

How We Did: Checking the Card

Friday's card went 6-6 on sides and 4-8 on totals across 12 games.

New York @ Boston: The preview leaned Boston -2.5 (Toss-up) and the over at 224.5 (Toss-up), citing a rivalry game between two 0-1 teams with our number a fraction from the book on the side and two points over on the total. Boston won by 4, 1.5 points past the number, and the teams combined for 210 points, 14.5 under the total. The side lean cleared; the over lean missed.

Detroit @ Miami: The preview leaned Miami +1.5 (Toss-up) and the under at 237.5 (Lean), citing our number with Detroit by a point on the road and a total almost eight points below a line pricing two fast starts. Detroit won by 17, so the side fell 15.5 points short, and the teams combined for 239 points, 1.5 over the total. The side lean missed; the under lean missed.

Houston @ San Antonio: The preview leaned Houston +5.5 (Strong) and the over at 227.5 (Toss-up), citing our number nearly even after the openers against a book still pricing the Spurs like the team that just played in the Finals. Houston won outright by 4, and the teams combined for 224 points, 3.5 under the total. The side lean cleared; the over lean missed.

By tier: Strong 2-3, Lean 5-6, Toss-up 3-5.

The rest of the slate, winner first:

Trail Blazers 128, Kings 120: SAC +7.5: Missed · Under 232.5: Missed

The headline takeaway: the sides broke even on the night, with the four Strong side leans splitting and Memphis clearing outright late, but the totals had their first hard night after a 5-0 start, with five of the eight misses coming on unders that went over.
