NBA Preview | October 23, 2026

Friday is the first night of the season where almost every team has a result to answer for. Twelve games, starting with a 4:00 PM ET tip in Milwaukee and ending with three on the West Coast, and two on Prime Video that pair teams coming off very different openers. The Knicks and Celtics both lost their first game and meet in Boston. Houston, which just beat Dallas by 18, visits a San Antonio team that dropped its opener at home. And Giannis Antetokounmpo gets a second look at a home crowd after a 25-point loss, this time against a Detroit team that won its first game. Those three get the full write-up and a free card; the other nine are in Tome Intel. All times are Eastern.

Two 0-1 Teams, One Old Rivalry

New York Knicks @ Boston Celtics | 7:00 PM ET | Prime Video

KEY STAT

38

Points Paul George scored in his Celtics debut on Tuesday, with five steals, in a 121-113 loss in Detroit. For a player whose health was the biggest question of Boston's summer, it was about as loud an answer as he could give.

Both of these teams spent Tuesday learning something. The Knicks raised their first banner in 53 years and then lost 106-100 to Philadelphia, with Jalen Brunson scoring 21 and Karl-Anthony Towns adding 19 points and 12 rebounds. Andre Drummond grabbed 14 rebounds off the bench, which is the kind of size Mike Brown added him for, but New York's offense never found the rhythm that carried it through June. The good news for the Knicks is the injury report: only three two-way players are listed.

Boston's loss looked different. Paul George, the question mark of the Jaylen Brown trade, scored 38 with five steals in Detroit, and Jayson Tatum handed out 11 assists in his full return, but the Celtics gave up 121 to a Pistons team that pushed them around inside, with Jalen Duren scoring 22. Devin Carter is the only name on their report.

Both teams have had two days off since, and the market has this one almost exactly where it opened. The matchup is Boston's three-point volume against a Knicks defense that held Philadelphia to 106, and whether New York's size, Towns and Drummond, can do to Boston what Duren just did.

New York wins if Brunson gets back to his usual rhythm, Towns and Drummond win the glass the way Detroit did on Tuesday, and the Knicks make Boston's shooters work for every look.

Boston wins if George keeps doing what he did in Detroit, Tatum's passing finds open shooters, and the Celtics' defense holds up better on the interior.

Lean Boston -2.5 (Toss-up), and lean the over 224.5 (Toss-up).

THE CARD · NYK @ BOS

The line BOS -2.5 · total 224.5 (spread unchanged from the open, total up 1)

Our number BOS -2.7 · total 226.5 · 0.2 pts from the book on the side, 2 on the total

Last 1 NYK 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U · BOS 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U

Rest & availability NYK two days off, three two-way players questionable · BOS two days off, Carter out

The public 61% of tickets on BOS · 66% on the over (SportsbookReview, as of Oct. 22)

Lean BOS -2.5 (Toss-up) · Over ↑ 224.5 (Toss-up)

Driven by the number. Both teams are 0-1, so neither result moves the ratings much, and our number lands within a fraction of the book on the side and two points over on the total. Two toss-ups for a rivalry game that the market has priced about where we would.

Giannis's Second Night Comes Against the East's Top Seed

Detroit Pistons @ Miami Heat | 8:00 PM ET | NBA League Pass

KEY STAT

35

Points Giannis Antetokounmpo scored in his Heat debut, on 13-of-19 shooting. Miami still lost by 25 to Minnesota, as Anthony Edwards answered with 45.

Giannis Antetokounmpo's first night in Miami was a reminder that one player can't cover everything. He scored 35 on 13-of-19 shooting and Davion Mitchell handed out 11 assists, but the Heat lost 131-106 to a Minnesota team that shot them out of the building behind 45 points from Anthony Edwards. Bam Adebayo had 15 and seven rebounds. The Heat's three ankle and calf questions from opening week, Vladislav Goldin, Myron Gardner and Dru Smith, are all listed as available.

Detroit already has a statement win. The Pistons, last season's top seed in the East, beat Boston 121-113 on Tuesday, with Jalen Duren scoring 22 with nine rebounds and Cade Cunningham handing out eight assists. They've had two days off since, one more than Miami, and the only regular on their report is Taurean Prince, probable for personal reasons.

The matchup is Duren against Giannis and Adebayo, two players who do their best work in the paint and a center who just dominated Boston's new frontcourt. Miami's defense gave up 131 on Wednesday; whether it can stay in front of Cunningham is the first test of how fast this new group learns.

Detroit wins if Cunningham controls the pace, Duren holds his own against two bigs, and the Pistons' defense makes Giannis work for his points.

Miami wins if Giannis gets help from a second scorer, the Heat defend far better than they did Wednesday, and Adebayo wins the matchup with Duren.

Lean Miami +1.5 (Toss-up), and lean the under 237.5 (Lean).

THE CARD · DET @ MIA

The line DET -1.5 · total 237.5

Our number MIA +1.0 · total 229.6 · 0.5 pts from the book on the side, 7.9 on the total

Last 1 DET 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U · MIA 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U

Rest & availability DET two days off, Prince probable · MIA one day off, Goldin, Gardner and Dru Smith available

Lean MIA +1.5 (Toss-up) · Under ↓ 237.5 (Lean)

Driven by the number. Our number has Detroit by a point on the road, which lands inside the book's 1.5, so the side is a toss-up. The total is the gap: 237.5 is pricing two fast starts, and our number sits almost eight points lower.

Durant's Rockets Visit a Spurs Team Looking for Its First Win

Houston Rockets @ San Antonio Spurs | 9:30 PM ET | Prime Video

KEY STAT

30 + 30

Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. each scored 30 in Houston's 128-110 opening win over Dallas, with Fred VanVleet handing out 11 assists in his return.

Houston's opener went about as well as it could have. Kevin Durant scored 30 on 10-of-16 shooting, Jabari Smith Jr. matched him, Alperen Şengün added 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Fred VanVleet had 11 assists in his first game back from a torn ACL. Cooper Flagg's 32 for Dallas wasn't enough. Steven Adams (calf) and Reed Sheppard (knee) are questionable after one day off.

San Antonio's opener went the other way. The Spurs lost 116-104 at home to Oklahoma City, with Stephon Castle scoring 24 and Victor Wembanyama grabbing 13 rebounds, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 32 was too much. Now the status that matters is De'Aaron Fox, questionable with a right wrist sprain, along with Keldon Johnson (mouth laceration). Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance remain out.

This is the Texas matchup that decides how far Houston's size can take it. Şengün and Adams against Wembanyama is the most interesting frontcourt battle of the night, and if Fox sits, the Spurs' young backcourt has to carry the offense against one of the deepest defenses in the West. The line has come back a point toward Houston since it opened.

Houston wins if Durant and Smith keep shooting like Wednesday, Şengün and Adams make Wembanyama work on both ends, and VanVleet keeps the turnovers down.

San Antonio wins if Fox is cleared, Wembanyama controls the paint the way he did in May, and Castle and Dylan Harper make Houston's guards defend for 48 minutes.

Lean Houston +5.5 (Strong), and lean the over 227.5 (Toss-up).

THE CARD · HOU @ SAS

The line SAS -5.5 · total 227.5 (spread moved 1 toward Houston from the open, total up 3)

Our number SAS -0.3 · total 228.3 · 5.2 pts from the book on the side, 0.8 on the total

Last 1 HOU 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U · SAS 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U

Rest & availability HOU one day off, Adams and Sheppard questionable · SAS two days off, Fox and Keldon Johnson questionable, Harris and Quaintance out

The public 58% of tickets on SAS · 64% on the over (SportsbookReview, as of Oct. 22)

Lean HOU +5.5 (Strong) · Over ↑ 227.5 (Toss-up)

Driven by the number. Houston's 18-point win and San Antonio's home loss pull our number nearly even, against a book that still prices the Spurs like the team that just played in the Finals. Strong is the size of that gap after one game each, and De'Aaron Fox's wrist is the status that matters most before tip.
