How Fast Break Works in 2026-27

Fast Break is back on opening night, and the rule that matters most this season is one that was gone last year. Every Moment now has a set number of uses per run again, and the count comes from the Moment's tier or its average sale price, whichever gives you more. Three modes return: Classic, Pro, and a rebuilt Historic that anyone can play without owning a Moment. And every run now feeds a season-ending tournament, the Fast Break Finals, with a qualifying line you can see from day one. Here is how the pieces fit, in the order they will matter to you.

If you are here for Historic specifically, the full breakdown of the salary-cap mode is in How Fast Break Historic Works. This piece covers the season as a whole.

Uses per Run Is Back, With a Twist

Fast Break used to limit how many times you could play a Moment in a run. Last season dropped that. This season it returns, and the twist is how the number is set. Each Moment's uses per run come from either its tier or its average sale price, and you get the higher of the two.

Tier

Average sale price

Uses per run

Common

Up to $10

1

Rare

$10 to $50

2

Legendary

$50 to $300

3

Any tier

$300 to $1,000

4

Ultimate

Over $1,000

Unlimited

In plain terms, using Top Shot's own examples: a Rare that sells for $9 still gets two uses, because its tier beats its price. A Rare that sells for $75 gets three, because its price beats its tier. A Common that trades at $4 plays once per run. Ultimates play every night.

A run is the unit this is measured in. Top Shot says each run lasts 11 to 13 game nights, which works out to about two to two and a half weeks on the calendar (Run 1 is October 20 through November 1). So the question each run is not "who is eligible tonight" but "which nights are worth a use." A Legendary with three uses across twelve game nights means nine nights he sits, and picking the right three is the new skill. The honest way to play it: spend uses on the nights where the objective fits the player, not the nights where the opponent is bad, and save at least one use for the back half of the run when the leaderboard is set and you know what a night is worth.

One thing worth knowing about our Fast Break boards. The Classic and Pro boards rank every player on the slate against the day's objective, and they cannot know your collection. Two collectors can see LeBron at the top of the same board; the one holding a Rare has two uses this run and the one holding a Common has one. The board tells you who is worth a use tonight. How many uses you have left is yours to track, and the arithmetic is the table above.

Three Ways to Play

Classic. The one you know. Any Moment in your collection counts, you pick five every game night, and a daily objective decides what the lineup is scored on. Uses per run apply here.

Pro. Built around what is coming next on Top Shot. Each Pro run is themed to the upcoming drops, with nights built around the sets in the next drop, plus nights for the flagship Rare and Legendary sets (Metallic Gold LE, Holo Icon, Top Shot 50, Cosmic, Holo MMXX), for Top Shot Debut Moments, and for Moments carrying reward badges from Challenges, Leaderboards, and Crafting. Same five-player, objective-driven structure as Classic, drawn from your collection, with uses per run applying. The Pro board will read differently from the Classic board on the same night.

Historic. Free to play, and the one that changed the most. Simulated games between NBA legends, five picks under a 350 Roster Point budget, no ownership required. Owning a legend's Moment lowers his cost, from 5% for a Common or Fandom to 20% for an Ultimate, rather than unlocking him. There are no uses per run in Historic because there is no collection gate; the budget is the constraint instead. The full explainer, including what changes about picking when there is a cap, is here.

The Fast Break Finals

Every run this season is a road to the same place. The Fast Break Finals is an invite-only tournament from Tuesday, March 30 to Sunday, April 11, 2027, and the qualifying line is a top-50 finish in any Classic or Pro run during the season. Classic runs feed the Classic Final; Pro runs feed the Pro Final; a collector can qualify for both. The top ten in the Classic Final receive a seat in an NBA Finals suite. The Pro Final plays for its own prizes, with details still to come from Top Shot. An open Classic run keeps going for everyone else while the Finals play out. Runs also carry their own nightly and per-run prizes in Top Shot credit (Classic) and sealed packs (Pro), with Run 1 boosted; the full table is in Top Shot's post, linked below.

What that means for how you read a run: the line is top 50, not first. A run where you finish 38th qualifies exactly as well as one where you finish first, and uses per run makes that a planning question. Qualifying in one run early in the season, then playing the rest of the year for enjoyment, is a legitimate strategy that the old format did not reward.

The Calendar Through December

Top Shot has published the first five runs. No Fast Break on nights without NBA games: November 3 and 26, and December 6, 7, 9, 10, and 24.

How We Cover It

On every NBA game day there is a board for each mode: Classic, Pro, and Historic. The five names we like most against the night's objective (or, in Historic, the five best values under the cap) are free; the expanded table is for Tome Intel; and the Fast Break dashboard, with the Historic lineup optimizer, is on the Dashboards page for Tome Edge, which comes with a 7-day free trial. Tome Sports carries the day's boards and the run standings each morning.
