WNBA Recap | May 19, 2026

One game on the Tuesday slate, and it delivered. The Toronto Tempo traveled to Phoenix and left with a statement win, 98–90, behind a historic offensive performance from a pair of guards who could not be stopped. When you get 61 combined points from your backcourt in a road win, you're going to be hard to beat — and on this night, Phoenix had no answer.

Sykes and Mabrey Put on a Show

Toronto Tempo 98, Phoenix Mercury 90

The game was tight through three quarters — tied at halftime (44–44), then Phoenix briefly wrestled control with a strong third quarter (30–28) to trail by just two going into the final frame. That's when Toronto slammed the door. The Tempo outscored the Mercury 25–16 in the fourth quarter, and it wasn't particularly close once Brittney Sykes and Marina Mabrey got rolling down the stretch.

Sykes was the top performer on either side of the floor all night, finishing with 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting with four threes and a 87.5 percent clip from the free throw line. She added seven rebounds, six assists, and didn't commit a single turnover — a remarkably clean game at volume. Mabrey matched the energy with 30 points of her own, going 11-of-23 with six made threes and a perfect 2-of-2 from the line. That's 61 points combined from two guards on 42 total shots, and both played their best basketball when the game was on the line in the fourth. Kiki Rice rounded things out nicely off the bench, contributing 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting — 100 percent from three on her two attempts — with seven rebounds and a pair of fast-break buckets.

Phoenix had moments, and it'd be wrong to dismiss what they put together. Alyssa Thomas was excellent, posting 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting with eight assists and three steals — her efficiency was as high as anyone's on the floor. Natasha Mack quietly put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds on a near-flawless 6-of-7 shooting night. But the Mercury's perimeter production let them down badly. Jovana Nogic went 4-of-15 from the field and was a minus-19 on the night, and Kahleah Copper's 18 points came on an inefficient 7-of-18 showing with four turnovers — the Mercury needed more from both of them if they were going to offset what Toronto's guards were doing.

Phoenix also shot just 4-of-22 from three (18.2 percent). Against a Toronto team burying 15 threes at 41.7 percent, that gap from distance was ultimately the difference in a game where both teams found the paint at will.

TOR 98 · PHO 90

POR Wins.

The Toronto Tempo continue to look like one of the more dangerous teams in the WNBA when their guards are locked in, and on this night Sykes and Mabrey were as locked in as anyone could hope for. A combined 61 points, 15 threes as a team, and a fourth-quarter close when it mattered — Toronto did what good teams are supposed to do on the road. Phoenix will need to solve its three-point shooting woes quickly. Going 4-of-22 from deep while the other team lights it up from range is a losing formula no matter how well you play inside.

Star of the Night: Brittney Sykes, Toronto Tempo

31 points | 10-of-19 FG | 4-of-8 from three | 7-of-8 FT | 7 rebounds | 6 assists | 0 turnovers

The efficiency, the volume, the zero turnovers — Sykes checked every box. She had the game's highest efficiency score (37) and was the engine of Toronto's fourth-quarter surge. With Mabrey also going for 30, there was a strong case for either guard. Sykes gets the nod for the cleaner all-around line and the zero-turnover performance in 31-point outing.

Dud of the Night: Jovana Nogic, Phoenix Mercury

13 points | 4-of-15 FG | 2-of-9 from three | 3 assists | 2 turnovers | minus-19

Phoenix needed its guards to match Toronto's perimeter firepower, and Nogic simply could not. Thirteen points on 15 shots with that kind of minus/plus in a game decided by eight is a rough night by any measure. The Mercury will want more consistent shot-making from her as the season progresses if they're going to stay competitive in games like this.
